Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure, which is used to treat various skin conditions. The procedure is minimally invasive and is also referred to as collagen induction therapy. During this technique, a dermatologist punctures the skin using multiple, tiny, sterile needles and causes physical trauma. Due to this trauma, the deeper skin layer produces new collagen and makes the skin firmer, smoother, and more toned.

What Are the Targeted Areas and Skin Conditions for Microneedling?

Microneedling is used most frequently on the face and targets the following problems:

  • Microneedling for acne scars
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Age spots (or sun spots)
  • Large pores
  • The uneven tone of the skin
  • Reduced elasticity of the skin
  • Skin pigmentation
  • Rosacea
  • Other kinds of scars

Apart from facial problems, microneedling may sometimes also be used to treat stretch marks present in other regions of your body, such as the abdominal area and thighs, especially in combination with fillers. It may also help treat loose skin, for example, after liposuction or weight loss.

Additionally, professionals use the procedure to deposit medicine such as vitamin C or topical tretinoin into the deeper skin layers. This may help in enhancing the treatment of various problems, including scarring due to acne.

How Does the Process of Microneedling Work?

As already stated, the process of microneedling works by stimulating the production of collagen by the deeper skin layers. The trauma from the pinpricks that happen during the procedure produces minute injury to your skin, and it responds by producing new tissue rich in collagen. Due to this, the new tissue is more even in texture and tone. Due to injury and age, your skin may lose its collagen. By stimulating the production of collagen, the skin becomes firmer too. Hence, the microneedling before and after-effects on the skin are a more toned, firmer, and smoother skin.

Understanding the Procedure of Microneedling

During the microneedling procedure, the doctor makes tiny pricks beneath your skin using a pen-like device. These pricks are very small and are usually not noticeable post the procedure. The doctor moves the device evenly across the whole area; this leads to even rejuvenation of the new skin.

Before beginning the procedure, the doctor uses a topical anesthetic so that there are no chances of feeling pain. The anesthetic is usually given about one hour before the beginning of treatment. The process of microneedling may take about half an hour. After the procedure, the doctor may apply a calming treatment or a serum to the treated area. You may have to remain at the doctor’s office for about two to three hours in total for the complete procedure.

What Are the Side Effects or Risks of Microneedling?

Like any other cosmetic procedure, microneedling also has some side effects. One of the most common adverse effects is a minor skin irritation that occurs immediately after the procedure. Redness may also be present in the treated area for several days. You should call your physician if you observe more serious adverse effects, including the following:

  • Bruising
  • Bleeding
  • Peeling
  • Infection

You should avoid microneedling for acne scar and other conditions if you:

  • Have certain diseases of the skin, such as eczema or psoriasis
  • Are pregnant
  • Have recently had radiation therapy
  • Have a personal history of scars on the skin
  • Have open skin wounds

Recovery After Microneedling

Since microneedling is not an invasive procedure, it has a minimal recovery time. The majority of the people will need a very little downtime. You may observe redness and irritation of the skin for the initial few days after the procedure. This happens as a natural response due to the tiny injuries made during the procedure by the small needles into the skin.

You can return to school or work post microneedling if you find it comfortable. You may apply makeup to camouflage the redness for the initial few days. You should also apply sunscreen as the skin will become more sensitive to the rays of the sun.

You may see results of microneedling as soon as two to three weeks after the procedure. For sustenance of the results, you may require multiple sessions. You should discuss with your physician, who may advise the most suitable plan of action based on your individual treatment goals.

If you are interested in microneedling procedures, you should first look for a microneedling near me clinic and consult a doctor or dermatologist who is experienced and trained in such procedures.
