What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal uses light energy to destroy the root of a hair. The beam of light is absorbed by the melanin, the colored pigment in the hair. The energy from the light travels down the hair under the skin to its root. Because the energy is high, the root is destroyed and the hair cannot grow back.

Hair Grows in Cycles.
When the hair is attached to its root, it is in the “anagen” phase. At any given time, about 20-25% of hairs are in this phase. As the hair grows, it detaches from its root, which is called the “catagen” phase. When the hair is ready to be shed, it is in the “telogen” phase. Then the cycle starts again. Each hair cycle takes 2 – 5 months to complete.
Lasers can only remove hair while it is attached to the root, in the “anagen” phase. Therefore, with one treatment, you will lose 20-25% of the hair in that area. Treatments are usually done every 4-8 weeks, depending on the hair growth pattern in that body area. At each visit, another 20% will be removed. Most areas require 4 – 6 treatments in order to attain optimal results. Treatments last a few minutes for small areas like the upper lip and chin, 5 – 7 minutes for areas like the full bikini, and 20 -25 minutes for large areas like the legs, back and chest.
Does it hurt?
Laser treatment is gentle and nearly pain-free. The laser beam feels like a pinch on the skin. In areas where the hair is dark, coarse, or thick, more sensation may be felt. The pinch lasts just for a second and may almost feel like a rubber band being snapped on the skin. In some areas, there is no pinching feeling at all. After treatment, the area may be sensitive or itchy.
An anesthetic cream is available for use if you are nervous about the discomfort. Most people don’t require it, but if you are sensitive, please ask about this option. The cream will be applied twenty minutes prior to the procedure.

- Avoid the sun for 3 – 4 weeks prior to treatment.
- Shave the hair close to the skin on the day before or day of the appointment.
Post treatment instructions:
- Mild redness and swelling is common during the first 2 to 24 hours.
- Aloe vera or cooling packs can be used.
- Until the redness resolves, you should avoid hot tubs, strenuous exercise, and cosmetics.
- You should avoid the sun for 1 to 2 weeks or use sunscreen with SPF 45 or greater.
- You can shower and/or bath as usual.
- The treated hair will fall out in 1 to 2 weeks. You can use a wash cloth or loofa to help the process.
- You may shave between treatments but you should avoid waxing, tweezing or plucking.
How many Laser Hair Removal Treatments will I need?
The average person who wishes to do laser hair removal is recommended a base of 6 sessions in the same treatment area. With each treatment, a small percentage of hair will reduce, or become finer in texture.
Generally after 6 sessions the treated area should see about 50% reduction in hair. Remember, laser treatments targets current, active hairs. While your body is responsible for repairing all damaged cells in your body, including hair cells, your body may repair damaged hair follicles post laser hair removal treatments, thus requiring more treatments.

Laser Hair Removal Benefits
With the help of a laser, you may remove unwanted hair present on your body’s many areas, including the face, legs, back, chin, arms, bikini line, underarms, and certain other areas. Some laser hair removal benefits include:
Precision: A laser is capable of selectively targeting coarse, dark hair while at the same time not damaging the surrounding skin.
Speed: Each laser pulse takes a fragment of a second in which it treats multiple hairs at a given time. The laser is able to treat the hair from an area about the size, measuring a quarter per second. Hair on the smaller areas, for instance, the upper lip, may take less than one minute, whereas hair on the larger areas, for example, the legs or back, may take about one hour.
Predictability: In most patients, laser hair removal near me can lead to permanent loss of hair after an approximate number of 3 to 7 sessions.
Preparing for Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal treatment near me is not just destroying unwanted hair that anyone can do. It is a medical treatment that needs adequate training and has potential risks. Hence, before undergoing laser hair removal in Los Angeles, you must verify the credentials of the technician or doctor who will perform it.
If you are planning to have a laser hair removal procedure, you should avoid electrolysis, waxing, and plucking the hair for a minimum of six weeks prior to your session. This is due to the fact that the laser beam is focused at the roots of the hair, and they get removed temporarily by plucking or waxing.
You must also avoid going out in the sun for at least six weeks prior to getting the treatment and even after it. The efficacy of laser hair removal is reduced due to sun exposure. It also increases the chances of complications post-treatment.
Understanding the Hair Removal Procedure?
The technician or the doctor will trim the hair that needs to be treated up to a few millimeters over the skin’s surface just prior to the laser hair removal procedure. They may apply a topical anesthetic about 20 to 30 minutes prior to the laser hair removal near me to help reduce the stinging sensation from the laser pulses. The technician will adjust the laser hair removal equipment per the location, thickness, and color of the hair that needs to be treated, along with the color of your skin.
Depending on the light source or laser used, the technician and you must wear adequate eye protection. The technician will also apply a special cooling device or cold gel on the outer skin layers to protect them. This will also help in the penetration of the laser light into the skin.
Then the technician or doctor will apply a pulse of laser light to the treatment area and observe it for few minutes to ensure that they have used the best settings and no untoward reactions have happened.
After completing the laser hair removal treatment near me, they may give you anti-inflammatory lotions or creams, cold water, or ice packs to apply on the area to relieve any discomfort. You can schedule the next treatment session about 4-5 weeks after the first session. You should take treatment until the hair stops growing in that area.
Laser Hair Removal Treatment Cost
The laser hair removal cost, on average, is about dollar 280 per session. However, the laser hair removal prices vary widely and depend on various factors, including the following:
- Size of the body area that needs treatment and time needed
- Number of sessions needed
- The location where you are undergoing the procedure
- Whether a technician or a doctor is doing the procedure
For a couple of days post-treatment, the skin may feel and look as if it is sunburned. The hair treated with the laser will fall out during the following month. You should wear sunscreen for one month to help avoid temporary color changes in the treated skin.
